Fire.

Scruffy
I was getting ready to start writing this morning at five minutes to five when I got an email from my mom to call her about my older sister's house. Mom wrote, "Their house is burning."

By the time I got a hold of my sister, she was at her neighbor's place, about 100 yards away, and the top floor of their house was pretty much gone. Luckily, a trucker on the road next to them saw the smoke pouring out of their house and called 911 -- my sister and her family were woken up not by their fire alarms but by the police breaking into their house.

All they had was what they wore on their backs -- they didn't even think to grab anything on the way out, because they thought the fire in their chimney would be put out right away. They lost the two cars in their garage, everything in the upper floor, and they may be able to salvage some of the stuff in their basement, though it's all going to be a bit water-damaged.

And their dog panicked, got loose, and ran back into the burning house to hide. He didn't make it.

We're all in shock right now, but glad that my sister, her husband, and their two kids are okay. I just ask that if you have a few bucks, click the button below so I can send them some more cash so they can buy the bare essentials. Luckily, the Red Cross has already been there, and the insurance guys as well. But they're still homeless.

Thanks.

It's not much, but I sent something your way.

I'm glad the people are okay, but damn... Terrifying and overwhelming and awful.

Jim -- thank you so much. Every little bit helps, and the kind thoughts are always more valuable than money.

Hi Sarah, and thanks for your help already! I don't think there's anything you could do -- the response from the Red Cross was amazingly fast. Thank you thank you!

Man. Terrible.

I sent what I could--only wish I could offer more.

And their poor pup. I had to go spend five minutes hugging on mine after reading that.

Good luck to you and all involved in recovery and rebuilding.

Darin -- our dog got a lot of love from us this morning too! We take our pooch for granted. And huge thanks for helping out! That is very cool of you.

That's so awful. I'm glad they got through it without physical injury, but still. I'll be thinking of them.

I'm so sorry for what your family is going though. I'm grateful a passerby noticed the fire and that the family is okay. Warm wishes to all of you.

Thanks, Lisa. My wife just talked to my sister again, and asked her if she thought they would've woken up in time if the trucker hadn't called in the fire. She didn't think they would've -- the house went up mere seconds after the four of them got out.

It's truly crazy.

I was just signing out for the day when I saw this. I'm sorry about the losses, grateful that your sister and her family are safe. It shouldn't happen to anyone. Fire is always my biggest fear, whether from rags, the gas for the mowers, lint in the dryer vent, the woodstoves, or candles. Fire and my loved ones, fire and the animals I'm responsible for. My thoughts go out to you, to her.

Thanks, Oz, for everything. I just can't believe how fast it all happened, and how all their "stuff" is just GONE. I'm so glad they have friends so close to them.

Mike, I'm so sorry to hear this!

How old are the kids (and are they nieces or nephews)?

I'm guessing I'm not the only parent on your f-list who has bunches of out-grown (but still quite wearable) kids clothes around. Can we help with stuff like that?

Thanks, Deborah -- for everything! My neice is 18 and my nephew is 15 (and taller than me!). I think they're okay on clothes, or will be soon -- the Red Cross and various people have been helping out with that, and we've sent them cash for new stuff. I'm not sure what else we can do or send right now, other than lots of positive thoughts and prayers, if that's your thing. Thanks!

And hugs to your whole family.

Hopefully, this will help us all appreciate our pets more. I know our dog Whit has been getting tons of love (he's been so neglected since Drew was born)!

Thanks so much for everything!
